Infrared is a range of frequencies just below the visible light range. Such frequencies are useful as detectors of people walking through a door, or remote controls for your TV. They have limited range and are directional. Generated heat also gives off radiation (warmth) in the infrared range. This is the reason why infrared detectors can pick up images of people in darkness. A device which can generate infrared radiation can also give off heat which, in enough power, can cause damage just as any other heat source.
