Question:

I'm trying to figure out how long to make my rafters so the roof hangs over windows when it's hot in November to May.?

They make a 60 degree angle with the wall. Windows are 5 ft high, 3 ft below the top of the wall.Latitude is 48 degrees NCan anyone help me with this?

Answer:

thats about a 7/12 pitch so every foot you go out it will come down 7 inches 2 feet would bring them down 14 inches most homes will come down no lower than the top window trim
Our roof extends about 36 inches over our windows.
You never have comp etc shade with standard rafters without other designs. We had short patio porches designed back and front to fully shade the front / rear of the house. Even indirect heat can enter. We're talking UV rays and they can still affect heat in and on a home. Rats are deflected as well as directed.
Hot from November through May would be SOUTH latitude. Did you ever hear of shutters? Make some REAL shutters, like the east coast houses from the 1700s had. If you don't want to do that, then you're going to need a lot more than an extended soffit! Use these search words: image roofette
When I designed my house, I used a 5 1/2 freeze board that was at the top of the windows and then the soffit sit on top of that and extend out to the bottom edge of the rafters, but of course, I have a 4 and 12 pitch. I have about 30 inches that does NOT go below the window.
