Question:

I need help with a basic chemistry lab?

Hi recently my class did a lab experiment where we covered aluminum foil in: potassium nitrate, magnesium nitrate, zinc nitrate, copper sulphate, silver nitrate, and waterAll of these were done in separate wellsNow here is where I need helpI know that aluminum is higher on the activity series than most of the cations of the solutions so why is it that when we mixed these we saw no reactions at all? Is aluminum foil coated in something that would prevent this? or is there something else wrong with our experiment?

Answer:

don't use a microwave.
If no reaction occurs when there should be a reaction based on the activity series than your solutions that you are covering aluminum foil in are most likely contaminated and not pureWhich is common in labs due to students lack of respect for lab equipment and procedures.
