It seemed like a good idea at the time. I don‘t know what I was thinking. I wanted them to be shinier and blacker, and I thought the rubber looked thirsty. anyway, now I realize it was dumb. What kind of damage can result from this? I noticed some tiny cracks in the tire--I‘m pretty sure they were there beforehand though. But the oil seemed not to be drying up and going away near the cracks--it‘s darker by them.
So that you can see oncoming traffic and they can see you.
Why is it important that your tires be shiny? Are you a rider, or a show guy? Placing any kind of oil on rubber is never a good idea, esp. on tires. Oil weakens the molecular structure of most rubber compounds. I'd replace the tires and call it a lesson learned before you have that failure in traffic and get hurt or seriously killed.and there are tire shine products that CLAIM not to harm rubber, if ya just gotta sparkle.myself, I wash my bike twice a year, whether it really needs it or not. K ;o)
I like to put oil on my back tire so it smokes when I'm taking off at stop signs.
