my house is conventional floor there is 2 wood boards then 1 plywood. need to know if prime is all I need to do.

I understand trying to get away from the expense of hardibacker. However, over a wood subfloor, you to use some sort of underlayment to prevent cracking of the grout and tiles popping loose. Custom building products has a new product called easy mat it is a crack isolation membrane that comes on a roll. It works great, it's light, easy to install and costs about 1/2 as much as hardibacker. They have it at home depot or at your local flooring store.
