you don't really need rpms to know when to shift just when is gets kind of high let off the throttle and pull in the clutch shift to the next gear slowly release the clutch and roll on the throttle
I understand trying to get away from the expense of hardibacker. However, over a wood subfloor, you to use some sort of underlayment to prevent cracking of the grout and tiles popping loose. Custom building products has a new product called easy mat it is a crack isolation membrane that comes on a roll. It works great, it's light, easy to install and costs about 1/2 as much as hardibacker. They have it at home depot or at your local flooring store.
