Question:

I want to run copper pipe through my wood burning fireplace to get hot water. How close before it melts?

Im not sure if the copper can hold up to the heat when the fire gets hot below the grate!

Answer:

Hi The copper pipe will not melt if there is water in it, so whats the problem? So long as you don't run the pipework through the flames, I presume you are running the pipework around under or over the wood burner? cheers Bob a job
go to you tube and type in what u want to see.
It will melt if you have a forced air over the wood to get the fire hotter than you can stay in the room. Don't sweat the pipe melting, a wood fire isn't near enough without a lot more air. My swimming pool used a gas fired heater with copper tubing, never did melt the pipes. As long as you are circulating water through the pipe, it will stay cool enough to be safe. I had an old system 50 years ago with copper tubing in the firebox of an old wood range, it will heat water to as hot as you can stand, it just takes time.
