Question:

I wonder if I can use this charger.?

I bought a GPS receiver but it has only a car charger. The receiver says: Input: 4.6V-6V DC 1AI only found 1 charger at home that matches the same plug. It's a JVC portable disk player charger. It says Output: 4.5V 800mACan I use this charger with my GPS receiver?

Answer:

Generally swapping chargers around like this is not a good idea, but it is possible your swap will work. Most important: Check the polarity of the plug. Either the center pin is positive or negative. Both charger and GPS must use the same polarity. It may be labeled or you could check it with a voltmeter. Failure to get this correct could destroy your GPS receiver!! The 4.5V of the charger does seem like it is a bit below the correct range, but it might be OK. Also the 800mA range is a little low. I suspect that these number will work, even if the recharging takes 10 or 20% longer than normal. Also, be careful that some of these plugs look identical, but are not. If you force the plug into the device, you could permanently damage the socket in the device.
