Most kinds of paper are fine for origamiYou will need to cut it to a square before you start foldingBear in mind though, that compared to regular copy paper, specialist origami paper is: thinner (for multiple folds and small items) smoother (less friction when running fingers over folds) has a nice design or colour on one side (more attractive finished item) comes ready cut into squares
Origami paper is usually thinner and easier to foldThey do come precut in different sizes and color, but I personally think most are way too expensive Basically any paper works, I have even used candy wrappers I actually like using gift wrapping paper since it's cheaper, has unlimited designs, and thin like origami paperThe only problem is that you have to cut it yourself.
There is no real need for origami paper; it is slightly easier to fold and you can get it in various sizes, so it's really up to you.
