I am trying to install a new smoke alarm inside a room of my house, but when I attach it to the wires in the ceiling it sets off all of the other smoke alarms in my house until I detach it. Is this supposed to happen (in which case is there a way that I can silence them all at once or do I have to silence each one individually), or what can I do so that this doesn't happen?

The difference between sch 80 and sch 20 is thickness. On the pipe the outside diameter is the same the wall thickness is what changes same on fittings. So yes they will work the fittings will just be thinner walled tha the pipe. This link will give you pipe dimensions. Good Luck
