Question:

Is A Change of Transmission Fluid the Same as Getting a Transmission Flush?

I‘ve read to steer clear of transmission flushes as they might cause damageAnd I‘ve also read about ‘changing transmission fluid‘are these things the sameand if not, what‘s the difference? What should I do? 75k on my car and never changed or flushed anything yet and the transmission fluid color is red/pinkishthanks

Answer:

A transmission flush is not the same thing as changing your transmission fluid. A flush actually loosens particles that are in the transmission and forces them out. The problem I generally hear with a flush is that the loosened particles, typically small flakes of metal, don't all get washed out of the system and they can cause problems with your transmission and lead to premature failure. A change of transmission fluid on the other hand, only drains the fluid out of the system, about half of the fluid to be more precise. You have to remove your transmission pan if it doesn't have a drain plug, which most of them do not. Then you let all of the fluid drain out until it is just barely dripping. Replace your transmission filter with a new one, replace the gasket on the transmission pan, and your done! The transmission filter comes with a new gasket for the pan, so you don't have to worry about the added expense. Draining your fluid doesn't put any pressure in the system, so the only thing that drains out is transmission fluid, and any particles that are already loosened and floating around anyways.
No, to change your transmission fluid involves draining and refilling, that's all. A flush, forces fluid through your transmission. The theory is that this loosens all the crud that's built up over the years and allows it to drain out of the transmission. The reality is somewhat different. Usually what happens is that the crud that gets loosened up lodges in other areas of the transmission and can actually cause more problems than you had to begin with. I don't believe in flushing. If it gets to a point that it needs work, it should be rebuilt, not flushed.
I completely agree with Pete M, these flushes that they talk about should be called back flushes. The normal path of the fluid in a transmission is that it gets drawn through the filter, into the valve body and trough the many small passageways of the transmission and back into the pan to be drawn through the filter again. A back flush pushes the fluid the opposite direction so all the crud that the filter has caught over the years gets push back the other way through the transmission and through those little passageway and then through the valve body. Many transmission are junk after this procedure.
