Question:

Is a rocking chair really important in a babies room?

I noticed a lot of baby shower registries have a $400 rocking chair on them. the stores are packed with 500 choices of chairs. So I was wondering how important is it REALLY?Did you/do you really use yours with your new born?

Answer:

They tend to be very helpful in getting a baby to calm (and even sleep)! So they're not a necessity (like a crib) but they're incredibly handy. I found my favorite at an unfinished furniture store. $60 for the rocker plus $50 for the stain and a good cushion.
I'm sitting in a rocking chair right now, nursing my baby to sleep while I'm on my laptop. So yes, I really use it all the time. It's not absolutely essential - I could manage without it - but it sure is nice.
Wow, how impolite ask for $400 rock chair! Tacky! Parents must buy the nursery furniture by themselves, as well as nursing pads, breast cream, post-partum pads and other personal products. Traditionally, baby registry is a big no-no because it sounds that you're telling guests what to bring you. It need not be a rocking chair, just a comfortable armchair and it's you who must buy, don't put that on baby shower gift list.
A rocking chair or glider is very pleasant, but of course not vital. If baby will be sleeping in the nursery you will need SOME sort of chair in there, so mama can sit down to nurse without treking across the house first ... but a rocker isn't vital. And yes, I used mine a lot. (A glider, not a a rocker.)
Both my kids have rocking chairs in their rooms. I wouldn't classify it as critical but they are nice to have if you have the room. I didn't use them a lot when my kids were newborn, mainly because I preferred nursing on the couch or in bed. But my son is now almost 4 and still has a rocking chair in his room, for seating. If you get a simple wooden one, it could always be used in another room later on. EDIT TO ADD: My son's rocker was given to us by my mother in law, my daughter's was bought for us by my mom at Babies R Us for $110.
