Question:

Is my transmission out?

I drive a 1994 pontiac firebird with a 5.7L LT1 V8 w/ an automatic transmission the other day i was driving and all of the sudden it wouldn‘t shift gears while i was in drive. When i step on the gas it just boosts the rpms up. Now when i have it in drive it just rolls back. Can you tell me what the problem is and how to fix it? If the transmission is out how much do you think it will cost for a new one?

Answer:

sounds like your tranny is out, make sure the fluid is full. a rebuilt transmission will cost several thousand.
transmission more than likely gone no longer new transmissions they are only new for the first couple of years till the dealers get enough back to rebuild them then they become re-man so either re-man/ rebuilt/ or junkyard rough price depending on warranty and so forth will be in the 2000 dollar range with labor
Make sure it has enough transmission fluid, if it is too low, the car will not engage into gear. If it has enough fluid and still will not engage, the trans is probably shot. You will have to hunt around for a transmission in salvage yards ETC. It will not be cheap, the LT1 engine has a lot of torque and the transmission as a result is fairly heavy duty.
