Question:

Is the ammo for Desert Eagle .357 & .44 magnum a true semi-auto cartridge? Never seen one of them.?

I am interested in buying a Desert Eagle .50 AE (just for fun) and wondered if I get the whole kit what kind of ammo the other types use? I‘ve never seen semiauto ammo for a .44 or .357, only revolver cartridges.

Answer:

It uses the regular old rimmed revolver cartridges. You just must be careful when you load the magazine that the rims don't get behind the cartridge below it. You must use good jacketed bullets or the lead will foul the gas system of the DE. DE provides a list of which brands of ammo perform best in their handguns in the manual. If you get the 50 ae, you don't have to worry about it. It has a rebated rim (the rim is actually smaller than the diameter of the case) and feeds very well in a semi auto handgun. The desert eagles are a lot of fun to shoot. You must use proper holding techniques or they are prone to jamming, but that is shooter error, not any fault of the pistol. You have to make sure you are holding the gun sturdy enough for the action to work against you. A lot of people complain about them, but my younger brother bought one and loves it. I've shot it several times and it is a hoot to shoot it.
I've fired both and neither was a semi automatic, but revolvers. Semi auto's are usually 9mm and that's for a reason.
