You have to take away the air, so cover it with a lid or something.
If you are using equipment commonly found in a lab, here is what I would do: First, goggles and gloves for safety. Then, get a hot plate with a magnetic spinner, beaker filled with some water, an aluminum dish or weigh boat smaller than the beaker, a small piece of wax and a thermometer. The water beaker serves as a heat sink to measure temperature. Make sure it is well mixed. Float the small dish with a piece of wax in it on top of the water. Assume the dish is the same temperature as the water. When the wax turns liquid (smaller pieces will be easier to tell), read the temperature of the water. That's the melting point.
