I need to replace the tires on my 06 gsx-r 600, I know the exact sizes that i need. They list my rear tire 180/55ZR-17 and my front tire 120/70ZR-17 but they have two or three options. Examples: 180/55ZR-17, 180/55ZR-17 M, 180/55ZR-17 E, 180/55ZR-17 J. I've been told to stay away from o.e. replacement options cause they aren't the same. What is the difference?
There is no difference. As long as you get the correct size any brand tire will fit. Just make sure you get the proper size and speed ratings for your bike.
Sure, the bike manufacturer ships a certain tyre with the bike, but they don't make the tyre themselves; it's always one of the big names. As long as you get the right size and speed rating, it's just a matter of choice. Tyres vary tremendously in terms of dry grip, wet grip, tread depth, off-road / green laning ability, price, how they feel when you lean it over, how long they last and so on. You've got to think, what's most important to me? If you're riding in all weathers - which I doubt, as you've got a gixxer ;) - then wet grip is a big issue. If you do loads of summer miles or hoon around all the time, maybe a longer-lasting compound matters more. Best bet: get on an owners forum and ask there. I'd say, try something different just for the sake of it. My trailie came with Bridgestone Trailwings as standard and they're a nightmare in the wet (they're not known as deathwings for nothing!) and after asking round, I switched to Michelin Anakees, which are 10x better, for me at least. Those tyres aren't suitable for your bike, but you see what I'm driving at. Keep it shiny side up!
There is no difference, as in size or fit, but i also would stay away form an O.E.M becuase a tire company would give you a better rubber, more durable and performance made. An O.E. would be made by a motorcycle companie. A tire company makes a better tire than a motorcycle company.
