Question:

Is there a way to get data from my desktop PC to my laptop PC with just an internet cable?

I just discovered my router is busted. I know that it's physically possible to connect a cable from a desktop PC to my laptop but is there a way to get it to recognize so that I can transfer data.- my desktop PC is on the way out.- Do I need to set up a Peer to Peer Network? If so, any easy tips to do so? - both PCs are using Win XP (SP2)- I'd rather not have to burn everything to a DVD if I don't have to.Thanks.

Answer:

Hm. you could try using both ethernet ports on the back of your main PC, bridging the connection, then using the network setup wizard. might work
Use the Home Network Setup Wizard of course.
i dont want to give you wrong information because i dont know what type of program or pc you are using and what works for one might not work for another. i would suggest you do a google search or yahoo. their are many web sites that will give you the information you are seeking; type in the search window this: transfering data from desktop pc to laptop pc. this should help you. you could also try ask your computers help program. hope this helps.
Connect the two with a network cable, and then run the Network Wizard. You want to create an Ad-Hoc (also referred to as a peer-to-peer) network. Select that and the wizard will do everything else for you.
I believe you can get a male / male usb cable and do a data link that way. I know that xp does have a way of doing it this way. try it out and see what happends.
