the size is worte on the side on the pipe and most drain pipes are all the same size and length and yes its across the end of it
One way to tell the size would be to go to the local hardware store or home center and measure the pipe that they have the same way that you were going to measure it at your house. It could be the circumference, as you described, or the diameter, whichever is easier for you. You would then know what you are working with and get the necessary materials before starting your project.
I'm 15, and I got mine done in May, when I was 14. Now yes, it does hurt. But it's really not that bad, AND i have a very low tolerance for pain. It really only hurts when the needle is in you, and when they put in the ring. The needle is in you for about 3-5 seconds and once it comes out it like, instantly goes back to normal. Then they put in the ring which hurts like a motherf*cker. But it doesn't take that long to do it. After the ring is in, it's not in pain, but it is sore. For the next month it's going to be sore and tender, and you're going to have some difficulty with bending over, playing sports, and such. You will also need to wear looser shirts cause they get caught on clothing very easily. But after the soreness goes away you don't even notice it's there, i know i find myself surprised now and then when I take off my shirt cause I completely forget about it. It's easy to change and easy to clean so I say go for it when you're ready!
If you have a cell phone call the job and tell them you have an emergency and need to leave and will be back as soon as possible to work. That way the job knows you had and emergency and if. If you have personal time take it.
