Answer:

The latch is designed to prevent you from using the smoke detector without the battery as a back up power supply. If you remove the battery and try to close the compartment door you will find the latch stops the door from closing. Of course you can still use the unit if it connects to a hard wire but the battery door will remain open. I don't suggest using the unit without both sources of power.
Yeah you have to be careful and have a four wheel drive car. But driving when it first snows or within a day of when it snowed is actually fun. You can romp through at 25-30 and not really worry about it cause the berms stop you from really going off the side and idk I have fun driving in the snow. On the other hand with ice it's a different story. When driving a couple days after it snowed and there is ice around I would seriously not drive faster than 25. And when driving downhill whether it's snow or ice I usually put my car in a lower gear and take it slow without having to keep my foot down on the brakes. So i'm not saying you have to go romp the snow when it first comes down but it is fun. I'd say just take it slow when driving in those conditions and never drive faster than you feel is safe and comfortable. Cause last February I was 17, I got a new jeep wrangler, and it was my first winter driving. It was the last week of February and I thought I got through my first winter driving. It was roughly about a week since it snowed last so I thought all the ice was melted, so I drove 35mph. It probably didn't help that I live in the mountains and drive on winding roads but I still drove that fast and I hit black ice and drove off the side of a cliff in between two houses, rolled over two boulders, through some small trees, and over a huge sewer pipe. I was lucky to have that roll cage and a hard top jeep. But yeah don't drive faster than you feel is comfortable, keep both hands on the wheel, and take it slow.
