Question:

Motorcycle or car?

im 17 and i live in jersey, and im not sure whether i should get a motorcycle or a car. Gas is supposed to hit 4$ by the summer, so i want good mileage, and motorcycles can be bought cheap. Any suggestions?

Answer:

Its easy for us on Maui, a motorcycle is the only choice. Gas has hit $4.01 for regular. Basic Insurance rates for a car is $800+ yr, MCs, $100+ yr. Those Chinese bikes are priced right. Get the 150cc or 250cc for a little better quality. The 50cc versions are too cheaply made. You should have your bike paid for after a yr and half or two yrs.
the transmission is due every 30k miles to have the fluid changed. i would go less with the sample they show you and go by the service MILEAGE for when your's is due (check your owners manual to make sure when your's is due). i have worked on vehicles that the factory fluid is darker than the replacement fluid, and some cars, the fluid can be bright red and never been flushed. others can drive 6000 miles, and the fluid turn dark again. so again, check your service mileage in your manual, then do your services accordingly. $179 is BAD, but you may find a repair facility that can do it for a little less. just make sure they put the correct fluid in (Mitsubishi SP-III fluid, i believe). or let the dealer do it, and at least youll make sure its done right.
You should only have been charged for gear oil in the 4 to 5 quart range. No flushing the auto transmission because you shift for your self Get that taken off of the bill.Hey I know that guy I think he's Mexican Manual
Buy an economy car. You will not save any money in the long run with a bike. Besides snow, consider all the rainy days and the roads are slick in the rain to even a experienced rider. By a nice motorcycle when you can afford a toy.
As much as I like motorcycles, a small car is the way to go given where you live. You can drive a car year round. It is equipped with heat for the winter and air conditioning during the summer. No safety equipment to buy. A quality full face helmet will set you back 350 to 500 dollars. You will need to take the motorcycle written and driving test for the motorcycle endorsement on your driver;s license with the related fees. Insurance will be cheaper. Also your maintenance costs will be less. Average car will see 50K plus miles on a set of tires before replacement is needed. The average rear tire on a bike will last about 15K miles. Front tire around 20K. Some more, some less, but much less than a car tire. Buy the car and save your money for a bike. I rented a 2007 Hyundai Elantra last November. I liked driving the car. Car averaged between 35 to 40 mpg. About the same as my 1800 Honda Goldwing.
