I have a Canon Rebel XTi and I haven't been able to use the chord that connects the camera to the computer in a really long time. So I bought a memory card reader which worked perfectly fine up until today. Now the card reader freezes the computer whenever I plug it in. I borrowed a friends camera cable and it won't even read that anything is connected. Any idea what the problem is?
There is generally a software cd to install on your computer. You do that? If not, the card reader should be working. Uninstall the software for that, and try to redo it!
Connecting your card reader to your Vista machine, should initiate the installation of the correct drives for the reader. Once installed, the reader is then used the same way a removable drive is used. I have three different card readers used on my various computers. It amazes me that computer makers have ignored those of us who use CF cards (mostly the pros) when they include card readers on their notebook computers.
I believed the problem lies with your computer and not the camera since it cannot even read card reader properly. Have you tried rebooting the computer to see if it works? It is still does not work, try another USB port but you have to reboot the computer first. Additional: It is possible that the card reader itself is not working. Have you tried the card reader on 3 different computers? Do you also have another CF card to test (i believed XTi uses CF cards) if the problem is the card reader or CF card. It is also possible that the CF itself is corrupted, the computer cannot recognize the card.
