Question:

my heat is not working?

i have a 1999 pontiac grand prix se and my heat is not working at all.even if you turn the knob it won't turn on.my mechanic says that there is an electric problem.that it's not getting any power.is it possible to directly connect the heater to the battery without any risks.i already checked all the fuses and they're fine.

Answer:

WHO IS GOING TO USE A HEATER WHEN HE HOT?
if you hot wire your heater unfused you could catch your car on fire.
These questions are hard to answer when we don't know how much you know. You know what I mean? When you say it's not working are we talking like you don't have the slightest clue what's wrong? You know that the fluid from the engine is routed through the heater (heat exchanger) as the engine heats up the thermostat opens and sends the radiator fluid through the heater, right? OK so then an electric motor turns a fan that moves air through the heat exchanger and the ducting routs the warm air to the passenger compartment, right? OK so you got a fan switch (probably not the problem) a motor (could be) and a fuse (you checked it and it's fine) You can get the shade-tree mechanic's repair manual and get the motor out of the heater unit. Hook it up to your battery and see if you can get some life out it. If not you can replace it. This is not that big a deal if you just follow the repair manuals instructions and pay attention. Can't figure a reason to hard-wire a heater unless you knew the switch was bad. By the way, you can check the electric problem by testing the voltage at the fuse when you turn the heater on. You hook your little voltage meter or light bulb thinger to the fuse and ground (-) then turn the switch to the heater on and off and you should see an indication.
you say if you turn the knob that nothing happens, not even the blower? it could be the switch on the dash, the blower, relay or the fuse.
If I remember right it has a computer that control the heater. It will cost a bit. But it is better than burning your car to the ground. You may be able to get used part from the junk yard. It will be cheaper. It is best the mechanic get the parts. Most have good dealing with junk yard.
