I don't feel confortable with my son staying over at my mother in laws house, because she doesn't have a smoke detector. I understand why she doesn't use one, because she has a wood stove, but I just don't feel safe. My husbands thinks that it is ok. My mother in law also doesn't have any electricity and no running water in the house. She uses a gas range and a generator also. I feel its to danerous for my son to stay there. What do you guys think?

No it will not go away, Everything in apartment should have been redone, including the floors. I have even seen concrete hold smoke smells for years, Unless treated of course.

There should be no odour if the restoration work was done right. And no it won't go away but you will get used of the smell, like a smoker can't smell the cigarettes they smoke but a nonsmoker can, you will find other people smelling this even from your close.Wall washing and cleaning in a smoke damage is for removing the soot so you can prepair for repair and remove what is damaged.This does not eliminate the odour. You can seal a smoked damaged area with a prime coat of KILZ then restore to finish but any char should have been removed. It is possible that the flooring should have been replaced because one possability is the soot could be on the underside of the flooring simply by the fire department hosing to extinguish the fire, the water would have seeped between the floor boards mixed with soot. This could not have been cleaned without lifting the floor.Without seeing the damage I would say it was not restored properly or something was over looked and missed. There are specific procedures to restore smoke, fire, water, flood etc damages that insurance companies and their contractors follow, So who done this repair? If it was through the insurance then the owner should call and complain, they have to fix this problem. If it was done by the owner then they didn't do it properly and they should repair this problem. An ozone machine will work to remove this odour but it may be only a temporary solution, again without seeing the damage I can't determine a solution, but I would say no to the aptartment if I didn't want to tolerate the odour until it is repaired. 25 years fire damage restoration specialist and counting.
It should air out just fine. Most likely you will get used to it as well. It wont hurt you..But the smell does tend to go away after awhile
