Question:

My Rat drags her back feet and seems unable to balance well. What do I do?

My rat recently began to walk funny, her back feet seem to slip out from under her when she walks. She also seems more timid and doesn‘t try to climb on me or escape like she usually does. I feel bad because it all started when she fell off my arm when I was moving her to her smaller cage so I could clean the big one.Ever since then she has been acting timid and now she seems to be having balance problems. She relies more on her front feet and often can‘t pull her wait up when she tries to climb. I only got her in December of 07 so she‘s really young. What could this be. I have heard it could be an ear infection but she doesn‘t tilt her head. She only has trouble walking and tips over sometimes. She doesn‘t walk around in circles and doesn‘t have red eyes so that rules out some other diseases. What could this be?!

Answer:

She has toxic phosphorous overload from lack of calcium. She needs dolomite (calcium-magnesium) and she needs it quickly. I get mine at the health food store. I mix 1/8th teaspoon dolomite, 1/16th chewable vit. C, 1/8th teaspoon vit. E, mix with an ALL Natural vanilla yogurt to make 3cc's/mils and give as much as she will take at one time. Repeat as needed.
