I go to the volume settings but see that the sound doesn't have another option for sound and yet, my laptop is displayed on my TV. I used the cable with my brother's laptop and it works for him, so i don't know what to do.

Its driver related if its windows 7 open the control panel hardware and sound manage audio devices Under play back select the one that says something like HDMI audio out and hit set default and it will now play threw HDMI , it should also revert itself when you plug out the cable
You need to go to Control Panel and set your sound output default to HDMI.
After connecting go to Control Panel - Sound and set HDIM as default. Play with the settings.
