i just purchased and within an hour needed gas and the check engine light came on , we disconected neg battery cable and it went off till got low on gas again it runs good but just would like it off to give me peace of mind thanks for any help
If you are low on gas you are inviting problems for the fuel injection system so I cannot understand why you would not want the light to come on?
Take it to a shop or buy a code scanner at any auto parts store.
Possible problem with the fuel vapor emissions system. Could be as simple as having an incorrect or malfunctioning gas cap. Could be a bad carbon canister, overfilling the fuel tank can damage it. Could be a bad vacuum line in the fuel vapor purge. Could be a fuel tank vent line is leaking. The only way to know why the engine computer is turning on the check engine light is to connect a scan tool to the diagnostic port. These tools start at about $200 and can get much more expensive, too much for your average shade tree mechanic. Many major auto parts stores will connect a scan tool for free and give you the diagnostic codes. This may be more helpful than throwing parts and money at it hoping to stumble across the problem You may want to take it to a reputable mechanic for an estimate. He will have the tools to correctly diagnose the problem. It may be money well spent.
