Question:

Network communications between virtual machines?

If I'm running multiple virtual machines (VMware) on one physical server host, and wanted to test an IDS with themIf the VMs are sending/receiving data to and from each other, does it leave the physical host, go out onto the network, or does it stay on the host? If all VMs are using the same physical NIC from the host, what MAC address problems come up on the switch?

Answer:

insulate ceiling crawl space
Sprayed in expanding foam insulation will do the job nicely, but it will be expensive because you'll have to hire an installerStandard fiberglass will be something you can do yourselfBuy the kind that has the batts in plastic sleevesMakes it less itchy, and there's no paper to mildewUse hanger wires called Tiger Teeth - they're stiff spring steel wires that you push up from the bottomThe ends are pointed and stick in to the joists; they arch up and support the fiberglassUse about four wires per standard batt.
This won't make you happyThe best way is to either enter the coffin and insulate the floor joists, enter the coffin and insulate the walls- if doing that you will have to heat the space, or dig 2-3 feet deep around the perimeter of the crawlspace and place rigid Styrofoam on the exteriorSorry there are few easy answers.
If radon is a concern, don't seal the ventsRadon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that, if allowed to build up, can cause health problemsThe best way to insulate your floor is to run rolled insulation between the floor joists and support it with thick wire that is just barely longer than the distance between the joistsPush up the insulation and then push the wire up to support itThe tension of the bent wire will hold the insulation in placeAs far as the heating ducts, I would be very surprised if they're not already insulatedI mean, who would install non-insulated ducts in Chicago?
When you set the VM instance to a Bridged Network Mode (rather than a NAT) it creates a bogus MAC address when you bind the virtual NIC to the Physical NIC and the DHCP server or switch will assign the VM's virtual NIC an IP addressBoth VMWare and VirtualBox create a a vitrual loopback NIC on their host OS but this is used for NAT mode in VMs and traffic in Bridged mode should router through the switchI may be wrong, but you can check this by looking at the number of hops traveled in a ping (look at TTL reduction)
