We just bought our first home and there is a large garden in the front yard that was started but never finished. It has decrative stones and it's freshly mulched, but nothing has been planted. Now what? Any suggestions? It's partly shaded, partly sunny. I would like to fill it with something pretty, but most of all EASY! I've never gardened before - HELP!
About the first of May, go to the garden center and buy some good looking annuals. Maybe verbena for the front and zinnia toward the rear. Later think about getting a few rose bushes and a couple of perennials, like iris. Plant daffodil bulbs next fall...and you have a garden.
lets okorder /... also bananas are great. yes you can grow a veriety in the mid west. this is called the musa basjoo banana. this bananawill die to the ground in the winter and come up in the spring. it is cold hardy to-4. with some protection it can survive to -20 palm trees. the needle palm it the palm tree for you. it is cold hardy to -20 and is a bush like palm hydraneas they are pretty and cold hardy also try adding a poind maybe and if you do water lilies are perfect yuccas they are cold hardy and add a nice look to any garden hibiscus the rose marllow is a perennial hibiscus. it will die in the fall and come back up in june. cold hardy to-20 good luck !
Look at the gardens around you. Find out what is growing best. Armed with an idea of colors and heights go to your local garden club. The advice is free and they will probably share their most successful plants with you. You'll meet people from all walks of life and have fun. Good luck!
Hi: I am a landscaper and designer and there are a couple of different things you could do. You could remove the decorative stone and mulch and set it aside to use, or you could just move them enough to plant some trees, shrubs and flowers. The only concern I have with the second option is you probably don't know if the ground has been prepped properly. Properly preparing any ground and soil is critical for a healthy garden. You have invested money in your first home, and landscaping is also an investment. I personally would recommend to take the decorative stones and mulch out. Properly prep your garden. I have a page on my website called plan - prep - and plant. This is a simple method to do any garden. You will want to til the area first and rake it out. Hopefully you can save as much of the stones and mulch. You might have to replace some, but it would be better than having dead plant speicmens in a few months. There are many different plants you could plant. I usually recommend starting out with trees, if you are going to plant them. You can do phase planting and the trees will be put in first, wait awhile and rest your wallet, and then plant some shrubs and flowers. We do not know where you live, so it's almost impossible to give any hints. My best suggestion would be for you to go to your local nursery and ask. They will usually give you great ideas if you buy your plant material there. By the way, there is no maintenance free garden.
