Answer:

dunno, but i used to smoke in my dorm room and the alarm didn't go off.. do it by a window with it open and just blow ur smoke out the window. if you're smoking cigarettes, just go outside! gross.
I smoke in my home and my smoke alarms do not go off. Now burning something in my oven is another story
Perhaps the hat was blocking natural air flow. It is illegal to disarm a fire alarm. If seen, you could be reprimanded or asked to leave the dorm. If a fire broke out, you would be liable for damages and possible lost lives.
In a 1500-degree fire you don't want anything that can trap heat, like a fire-proof blanket. That thing would melt instantly. If it doesn't melt, you are looking at trapping super-heated toxic fumes underneath it, exposing yourself to even worse problems if you do survive the crash. The best way to avoid being burned is to wait for the fireball to bypass you while you protect your head and torso in a good crash position, and then staying as low to the floorboards as possible while you make your way to the emergency exits, if you are able.
Smoke detectors are actuated by heat, they are set off by smoke particles. There are a few different types out there. In a dorm I'd expect to find the infrared type. In the detector there is a infrared LED and optical LED. When smoke particles OR dust particles kicked up by some placing a hat in it (ahem) it goes into alarm mode. Your friend placed a bog over it with out it going off out of luck but as a few people said before and it is true, tampering with fire alarm systems is a crime and you will be held liable if something goes wrong. Remember these systems are there to protect you so please don't mess with them.
