How to Measure for a Tuxedo, Suit, Shirt or Pant Remember to relax or the measurement could be up to 3 inches off. Safety Tip: Never use a metal or wooden tape measure to measure your body. Soft fabric or nylon, designed specifically for measuring a body, should be used. A. Over Arm: With arms by the side, measure around the thickest part of the arms. The tape should wrap around both arms and the body.* B. Under Arm: With your arms by your side measure around the thickest part of the chest, under the arms.* C. Waist: Measure around the waist in the same spot a belt is worn. Be sure to not include your pants and belt as part of the measurement. D. Shirt Collar: Wrap the tape measure around the neck about 2 to 3 up from the shoulder. At the front of the neck the tape measure should be at the spot where a button would be fastened. (or) Measure a correct fitting dress shirt from the middle of the button hole to the middle of the button while the collar is spread out flat on a hard surface. E. Shirt Sleeve: (Use the green line at E as a guide) With one hand hold a tape measure to the top center of your back. Then lay the tape measure over the shoulder and down the side of the arm to where you wish the shirt sleeve to end. A good spot is where your hand begins to get thick. If the difference between the Over Arm and Under Arm measurements is greater than 7 inches, order the next larger size.
