Question:

Physics Experiment!!?

ok.for class we have to pick an experiment and demonstrate it. the experiment has to be simple but not babyish(im in grade 11), so it has to be a little challenging. It has to be cool and interesting and have something to do with physics. Maybe something with fire. Please Help!!Thank You soo much!!

Answer:

If you want one with fire try this. You will need a bunsen burner, a sheet of copper gauze (mesh) about 9 square and a pair of tongs . Light the bunsen and then bring the gauze (held in tongs) down over the flame. The flame does not appear above the gauze - don't try putting your hand there as the unlit gas will be hot. Next - turn the bunsen off and place the gauze on top of the unlit bunsen. Now turn on the gas light the bunsen through the gauze - slowly lift the gauze up away from the bunsen. No flame appears below the gauze - you can prove it by putting your finger there this time. No can you figure out why? Yes - you guessed it - copper is a very good conductor of heat and the heat needed to ignite the flame is conducted away by the gauze so it is below its flash point. This is the principle of the miners' (Davy) lamp
