Global Dimming is the result of aerosols, both natural and man-made, that float around in the atmosphere. In order for global warming to occur the Suns radiation must strike the Earths surface so it is re-emitted in a different wavelength which is then absorbed by the greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere that can absorb that wavelength. Global dimming creates a sort of atmospheric albedo, that being the ability of surfaces to deflect the Suns short wave radiation so they aren't absorbed and re-emitted by the Earths surface. Snow and other highly reflective materials work on this same principal. It's a threat because it adversely effects plant life and other life on the planet. Man's contribution to global dimming began with the use of aerosols in different products. After 1940 and World War II these types of products became more abundant and resulted in a slightly cooling atmosphere. However the clean air act, which was remade in 1977 to disallow aerosols, was ratified by many industrialized countries and resulted in the climate once again warming at an accelerated rate.

It is always advisable to try it out after you buy the extinguisher to avoid fumbling with it in an emergency. Take it to you backyard and use it in short bursts so as not to empty it. You might even take the assistance of the local fire department. They will only be too glad to show you and on your part you’ll get the required skills to operate a fire extinguisher.
