Question:

Polarization by Transmission?

What is a simple, basic way, to describe how Polarized Light is created through Transmission?

Answer:

Polarization by transmission, as distinct from polarization by refraction, involves passing light through a polarizing filter such as polaroid. See the ref. In such a filter the polarizing agent consists of long molecules which are aligned in one direction and tend to absorb light whose vibration direction aligns with them. Thus the light they pass is predominately polarized perpendicular to the absorption direction.
