Go on a hike through rough terrain. What else do I have to do on a cold rainy night?
My suggestion to equestrians to be as safe as possible when you're riding your horse on the road: assume that every single car that's headed your way is driven by a blind deaf drunk idiot who is texting someone while conducting a conversation and has three screaming kids in the back seat. If you make that assumption, you have a chance to survive sharing the road with cars. Otherwise, you're toast. Seriously: in 30+ years of riding mostly in Southern California, you would not believe some of the idiocy that I've seen. I've had people deliberately swerve their cars towards me when I'm riding, I've had people wait until they're adjacent to my horse to blow their horns or rev their engines or squeal their tires, I've had people actually throw trash out of their car to try to hit my horse, I've had people scream obscenities at me and get angry at me just because I'm on the road not in their way, not holding up traffic, just riding on the side of the road. And at that, I've had it fairly easy; I know people who have had to deal with a lot worse. In a rural area where people encounter horses fairly often and most people have at least some understanding of horses, I think you have a chance to improve safety by educating people. In an urban area like Southern California, I don't think there's any chance educating drivers will help. People just don't encounter horses often enough to want to learn to be safe around them. You just have to assume that everyone you meet on the road is going to do something stupid or dangerous, and try to minimize your time on roads. Sad but necessary if you want to survive.
