Pull carpet out myself...?

I want this skanky carpet gone. How difficult is it to take out, and what does it entail...?Note- hardwood floor underneath...in good condition.Thank You.

Answer:

I'd like to add one important step to this very good list of answers. PROTECT YOURSELF Wear a HEPA respirator, or for God's sake at least a dust mask, because you are releasing years of hazardous particulate accumulation into your family's home. Mold, bacteria, skin cells, spill solids, you name it - will be floating around the house for hours after your done. If it's not too cold, push air out one window while pulling in from another.
You just need to pull it up at one corner and keep going. When you get a few feet folded back cut it and roll it up so it is all in manageable sizes. Then take up the padding and do the same. Last step is removing the tack strip along the walls. You'll need some kind of pry bar for that. Be careful not to stick yourself with the spikes.
Starting in a corner, use a pliers to pull the carpet back. With a utility knife, cut the carpet on the back side into manageable pieces. Haul out to a pick up or trailer and throw them in. From there it's off to a land fill.
just pull it up..you will need a scraper..pliers..and a hammer..use the pliers to pinch the carpet in the corner and pull it up..once all the carpet is pulled up..go around the edges..you will see a slim board like a ruler with tacks..pry that up and trash it..next using the scraper from one corner to the next slide it slightly to look for any staples or finishing nails..any staples located use the pliers to pull out..finishing nails use the hammer to nail back down..once that is done..clean the floor well and tada...
First, make sure to wear a dust mask as removing old carpet will cause airborne debris. To remove your old carpet, start at the edge underneath the baseboard using pliers to pull up the carpet along that entire wall. Now, using a utility knife cut the carpet in strips, so when you pull up the carpet its easy to roll up and remove. Finally pull up the tack strip with a pry-bar.
