Question:

question about a cars exhaust system?

one of my friends has an exhaust system on his car that he can control to connect or detach?or something like that. so he can drive around with the exhaust soundin all badass but when he sees a cop, he can make it really quiet.does anyone know how to get this done or what its called?

Answer:

Not much. There is no maintainance on the exhaust system except maybe for the rubber hangers that hold up the exhaust. Sometimes in older vehicles, oil leaks from the engine might pass through to the exhaust (unusual oil smell) and clog/damage the oxygen sensor that is connected to the exhaust. Depending on the actual exhaust material, this might damage the muffler itself. There is no actual schedule maintainance for the exhaust system.
It is called illegal on the street. Such systems are for people that use their vehicles on the street, and on the track, or for better mileage on the open highway. They are for unleashing power on the strip, not for making a person's car sound like a poorly maintained hunk of crap on the street. So if your only intent is to blast around town annoying people like a kid with a new noisemaker going look at me, this isn't for you. If your intent is solely to get better mileage on the highway, or more power at the drag strip, it may be what you need.
it's called , illegal. you can disconnect the flow of exhaust to your muffler, therefore allowing a loud noise, but you also bypass your emission control.it can only lead to more problems then it's worth.if you go down this path expect more problems then a cool noise is worth !
