Question:

Sign of the times? My husband was just telling me that he has to wait to put the recycle bin.?

.out because thelast several weeks, it's been raided for aluminum cans - or even cans that they think they might be able to sell for scrap metalHe's marked it on the calendar, each week it's happened, he said after the 3rd time, he has decided to wait to put it out until the morning of recycle dayThing is, he's ok with someone taking the cans, but they leave a mess digging through the bin.all the plastic stuff is left outside the bin and he has to go clean it up or it won't be recycled.I think it shocked him even more, when he saw what the people were driving while going through the bins and the thought of all the wasted gas! Oh.his other thing, they are noisy! It's not against the law, but would it bother you? How would you handle the situation?

Answer:

There are two or three regular recyle-panners in my neighborhoodThe one I see most often has a bicycle, and he carried giant bags full of aluminum cans on the front and the back of the bikeThe pile on the back reaches way up over my headThis guy is always singing or laughing or talking to himself, and he scares my kids with his unusual demeanorThere's also another man and a woman who I've seen stealing the cansI say stealing, because, in fact, the income from the cans is income to the city that can reduce the cost of trash disposal, and can reduce our taxesIt may not be a large amount, but with inflation and the increasing value of aluminum, it's getting to be more and more significant an amountOf course, I don't do anything about itWe kind of throw in the towel, because if they don't steal it when we're outside for a few minutes before we go to work, they'll steal it when we're at workStill, I think there should be an education campaign about this, so people understand the significance of what is going onSo I don't think there's much you can do except raise the issue with local politicians, and have them discuss it, to see if there's anything that can be done citywideWhen you say folks are driving around to collect cans, what occurs to me is that we should just pay them the few cents they get for the cans, and have them pick up everything and take it to the recycling centerNot that that would ever happenIn my neighborhood, as far as I know, I haven't heard too many complaints about the mess these scavengers leaveThey seem to be pretty good about piling everything back inWhat I do, though, is to hide the aluminum beneath a ton of newspapers (we have mixed waste stream recycling), and this seems to prevent the pilferingIt hardly matters thoughIf they've learned much by now, they've learned that at our house, there isn't much drinking of stuff from aluminum cansSo I can't think of any good solution, except to get more people thinking about itIt is annoying, though.
SO MANY POSSIBILITIES! however attempt to do anything efficient like organizing your folder, or cooking, or studying a god tale, and even cleansing and going by way of ancient garments!
