They are hardwired and the light is on. When I push the button the alarm comes on but I just recently got a new furnace and the guy said the smoke detectors would come on when he first started the furnace because it had to burn off oil. Well, they didn't. I also blew out a candle under each of them and nothing happened.
So you have resonance in the plywood affecting the speaker characteristics ? I'd read that MDF was a better material than ply for just that reason - that it was a lousy building material which paradoxically made it better for speaker cabinets. I'd think you could stiffen the ply with stringers glued across the inside faces, which would raise the resonant frequency, or maybe glue on something like thick rubber sheet to damp it. You are going to get a fundamental resonance just from the size of the box, from the air column. I think you can break that up by adding fibre batts inside the cabinet.
