Question:

solving an equation Polynomial Funtions?

A silo is a storage building shaped like a cylinder with half a shpere on top. A farmer has 1000 square feet of material with which to build a silo. How do you solve S=4pi r^2+2pi r h where r is the the radius of the cylinder and h is the height of the cylinder, and S equals the surface area. substitute 1000 for S and solve for h.

Answer:

substitute: 1000= 2*pi*r^2 + 2*pi*r*h isolate h: (1000-4*pi*r^2)/2*pi*r =h Simplify by dividing 2 on everything: h= (500-2*pi*r^2)/*pi*r
You can't solve one equation in two unknowns. There are an infinite number of solutions with different radius and height. You need some other fact. Was the question to design the silo with maximum volume? By the way, it should be S = 2*pi*r^2 + 2*pi*r*h as the top is only half a sphere.
