Alpha particles are very easy to stop, and the smoke detector is designed to do that. Alphas can be stopped with a sheet of paper. That idiot Ralph Nader tried to get smoke detectors banned in the 70's because they involve *radioactivity* [horror !!] and claimed that they would cause one person to get cancer in every decade or so. That totally ignores how many people died in fires who could have been saved by smoke detectors. Even if one person per year got cancer, tens of thousands are saved by smoke detectors. Only an idiot lawyer would demand zero risk [which is unattainable]; those of us with a brain understand that it is a question of risk reduction, not risk elimination.
