Question:

The engine light is on in my 2005 Chevy Malibu?

The engine light came on in my car and we took it to Pep Boys to get code pulled and they told us that it was coming back with two codes, P0101 and P0172. They told us the mass air flow sensor is bad and that it is running too rich, is this something that can be repaired at home my husband? He was told to replace the air filter and clean the sensor with fuel injector cleaner and that, that should do the job. Is this correct?

Answer:

I give it a 9 of 10 chance working
MAF sensor will run around $70 at your local auto parts store. Yes, your husband can do it at home. Your MAF Sensor is bad (P0101) and its causing your system to run rich (P01722, lack of air). Basically, your first problem caused the second problem. Also check and clean fuel rail and injectors.
