what exactly is an automatic transmission flushed with? i thought it was flushed with transmission fluid but i‘m hearing differently??

Hello a couple things happening here. a flush is not a flush with transmission oil, but a solution to better cleanse the transmission. You must also clean out the filter/screen. I own a shop and do not own the proper equipment to pump out all the oil. I go to a transmission repair shop and ask them if they can completely pump out all the old oil so there is nothing but new oil in the transmission. Good Luck
This is just another gimmick to get you to spend money. If you look in your owners manual you will not find anywhere ( Transmission Flush) or an interval to have it performed. Normal servicing is established by the manufacturer and this is your basic guideline for maintenance. Just to let you know, the fluid in the torque converter is trapped and only gets exchanged while the engine is running. If you apply that thought, flushing the trans does not make sense, your only flushing half of the fluid and the remainder is trapped. Save your money and perform the recommended maintenance only.
I find it hard to believe that anything else besides trans fluid would be used. But then again, I have never done a trans flush, only drain and fills with filter change. I read in the service manual that a solvent is used for flushing the trans fluid cooler. I also read in an informational bulletin re: FAQ for J 45096 TransFlow Transmission Oil Cooling System Flushing Machine - (Jun 25, 2003). Q: Why can't I re-use the transmission fluid I use for flushing? A: The very fine metal and clutch material debris from the transmission failure in the ATF causes failures with the hall effect speed sensors that are used to measure the flow rate. To avoid costly repairs, expensive filters, regular maintenance and problems caused by a partially restricted filter, the filter was not included. So I would say that this particular trans flush unit specified for the dealership to use uses trans fluid.
