Transmission or broken axle?

My Ford Taurus 1996, I was driving up a hill and when I started coming down the hill the RPM went up really high, and the car wouldn‘t move, it was a big whinniing noise it would just cruel (using the momentum from the hill) until it stopped no matter how much times i press the gas it wouldn‘t drive when i came to a stop i tried putting it in 1, and R it doesn‘t move only the RPM goes up, when i press the gas how ever it sounds like something is disconnected it sounds like that noise when your scraping sand of your shoes and its sounds like it coming from near the front left wheel. I got my mechanic to look at it, he said it could be the torque converter or could just be an axle his going to look more into soon, he didn‘t jack it up he just looked at it from the hood what do you guys think it is?Also the transmission fluid is full and red.

Its usually called Jake braking. You've probably heard semi's make that awful chattering noise when they are slowing down on the interstate.
This sign is for truckers. They have a engine brake called a jacobs brake which they use sometimes instead of the pedal. The brake is really loud so that why the sign says no engine brake.
It's not the axle. It's the transmission. The forward clutch piston has a very high failure rate rate on this transmission. But that means a total rebuild to get to it. You'll have to decide if it's worth it on a 96 vehicle.

A '96 Taurus doesn't have an axle, it has a front drive transaxle (a unit comprised of the transmission with two shafts coming off each side). More than likely it isn't either of the shafts having broken. That is pretty easy to check. Slide under the car and look to see if either of the shafts are broken. You should be able to grab the shaft with your hand, if it rotates continuously or is hanging down, it's broken. It could be all sorts of things internal to the transaxle, which means it will have to be removed for them to look at it. It very well good be the torque converter. If it fails, the transaxle will not work but it will not necessarily have burned the tranny fluid since it wasn't a failure in the clutches.
