Question:

Transmission servicing--?

When your mechanic services your transmission, does he change ALL of your transmission fluid or just 1/3 of the fluid? Which SHOULD he be doing?

Answer:

When draining transmission fluid from an automatic trans, not all of the fluid is drained, about 2 quarts remained in the torque converter, unless you specify for a complete transmission flush service.
servicing probably means he's changing the fluid which is about 2/3rds of the total fluid in the transmission. It depends on what kind of transmission it is though, if it is a manual, all the fluid is being changed, if it is an auto, 2/3rds is being changed. Also servicing means that he's checking the computer for any error codes and he's checking the case if you've driven into anything you shouldn't have, i.e. a big rock. What he should be doing is a transmission flush, that is what you want if your car hits mileage between 60 to 100 thousand miles depending on the car. They use a pressurized system to force all the fluid out of the transmission and replace all of them. It's good insurance but it costs more.
