Question:

turbo chargers/super chargers?

how much does it cost to buy and have a turbo/super charger installed. where can i buy one even, at a chop shop?currently i have a 2005 kia spectra, but am looking into cougars/celicas/stealths

Answer:

intake headers are always nice
summit racing sells them and you can expect to spend $2,500 for the unit alone not including the installation.
I wouldnt touch the Kia. Certain Stealths came with Turbos, pumping out 320hp. Celicas can also be turboed fairly easy. Check out STS for turbos, Paxton or Vortech. Id personally supercharge or turbo a Camaro or Firebird, 98+ with the LS1. They already have around 300 hp stock
Where do you live? Most of the kits I have seen start at over 3k and go up to 6k. And you will have to install it, which is going to be 500-1500 depending on how difficult the car is to work with. Installing a turbo will be more expensive than a supercharger b/c they will have to do a bunch of work on the exhaust. The Squires Turbo that SoCal recommended looks really good. It sort of sidesteps the engine and exhaust work that you would have to do. A turbo has some significant advantages over a supercharger. With the SC the speed of the compressor vanes is proportional to the engine speed, whereas the turbo spins up as soon as there is enough exhaust flowing by. Turbo's also have very little gas mileage penalty as they are only spun up when you are getting into it, while the SC is always spinning. The other disadvantage that SC have is that the compressor actually uses quite a bit of power, like having the A/C on blast everywhere you go, so for a given boost level say, 6psi, the SC is going to be down 20hp at the wheel relative to a turbo. My other recommendation/thought would be this: front wheel drive cars suck. They suck bad. Before I would spend a penny on mods I would switch to rwd or awd.
