It depends on the kind of look you want to achieveHow detailed? What kind of art design are you doing? If you are just writing a salutation you can use use melted chocolate or royal icingAs far as icing the cake - you can use buttercream (a real buttercream made from butter, p.sugar, vanilla and milk), rolled fondant (Satin Ice brand is a far superior quality than Wilton)It depends on your location as far as heat, cold and humidity are concerned, too.
By any chance did you use a boxed cake mix? Boxed cake mixes are extremely moist and do not always hold up well once iced and refrigeratedThe high levels of moisture in the cake make the cake pretty much fall and won't hold up too well refrigerated for more than a few hoursThe kind of cake you use depends on what you are using it for and the presentationI usually like to use a genoise (it's a sponge cake, so it's a little bit drier) that I brush with either liqueur or a simple syrup or a pound cake for a larger cake that will require more of a backboneRemember to let your cake cool completely before icingI actually like to put mine in the refrigerator before icing so that it is cool and easier to ice You can try using a hot milk sponge cake, which is slightly different from a regular sponge cake in that it has the addition of milk, therefore, more moisture.
You can either use aluminum foil, or if you have a frying pan which is safe to use in oven, should do the work.
