Question:

usb card reader and windows xp?

erverytime i plug a usb card reader, the computer is asking for a cd or software.i thought windows xp is plug and play? pls help

Answer:

Every piece of hardware that exist for PCs need a driver so as to help the operating system use it. Windows Xp has a very large database of drivers, but not for each and every hardware that exist. Your USB card reader is a new hardware while Windows Xp is lots of years old, so, how would people who built Win Xp years ago cater for a USB card reader in 2008? Obviously you need to install your card reader's driver either from the CD that came with it or by downloading it on the manufacturer's website
the drivers may already be included in your xp so just click install and ignore the option to install from a cd. the pc will then look for a compatible hardware from its files and if there is, it will automatically install them.
best bet is to download the drivers from the manufacturer website. this way you will get the latest version of it.
