This is a bit of a reach, but my first suggestion is to try another port. The other day, I was in a class where the student computers were semi-new Compaq Presario laptops. Each of the computers had two sets of USB ports on either side. The student next to me could not get her flash drive to work. I plugged it into a port on the other side of the computer, and it worked fine. What might be happening: laptops sometimes come with both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 ports. All USB 2.0 ports will run USB 1.1 devices, but the obverse is not always true. If you're jacked into a USB 1.1 port, your computer may be able to read one of the slots, but not the others. You can also try the device in another computer where you know you have a good USB 2.0 port, to see if it works. If you have the same problem, you probably have a defective card reader. If it's new, send it back. If it's not, get another one. They're pretty cheap nowadays.
