Modeling clay (Plasticine, oil moistened earth clay) doesn't crack because it never hardens even when solidOf course that means is is subject to damage if mishandledIt is commonly used for making models from which molds are made - thus the name[Modeling is unfortunately being added to the name of other kinds of clay, as if clay can't be pushed around without the word in its name.] All other clays shrink and thus if used on something of any size have to made hollow and of uniform wall thickness to avoid crackingThe description of your problems suggests you used ceramic (earth) clay but did not fire it in a kiln to make it hard and brittle Depending on how big you want to go and how much to spend, you can use polymer clay and bake in home oven at designated temperature or air dry clayPolymer clay costs more.
I wish I new, and it is beyond me that people think that NYC isnt the best place in the U.S, when it soooo is amazing!
