That would be chump change compared with what people could save by insulating their homes, trading their SUVs for Smart Cars and getting compact fluorescent lightsBut suppose that angels from Heaven put mirrors to block just enough of the Sun's rays to exactly cancel out the effects of the carbon dioxide we put in the atmosphereAnd to make Phoenix happy, suppose that that mirror is very smallAnd suppose that there are enough fossil fuels in the world to last us for 500 yearsAnd suppose that the cost of renewable energy never comes down, and that to convert to renewable power, the NAFTA zone would have to lower its standard of living to that of Haiti, a supposition which I do not believe for an instantIt would still be far far worse to suddenly run out of fossil fuels than to switch to new energy sources nowIn fact, probably the one good thing about global warming is that it gives us a reason to begin the transition now, rather than when we suddenly have no hydrocarbon fuels, And in 500 years, rather than having to switch to wind power when there is no longer fuel to run the trucks and cranes which would install the wind turbines, our descendants could be advanced beyond that stage and might be traveling to the stars.
