What are the advantages and disadvantages of silicone?
Silica gel (Silica gel; Silica) alias: silicone rubber is a highly active adsorption material, belongs to amorphous material, its chemical formula is mSiO2. NH2O. Insoluble in water and any solvent, non-toxic, tasteless, chemical stability, in addition to strong alkali and hydrofluoric acid, do not react with any substance. Different types of silica gel have different microporous structures because of their different manufacturing methods. The chemical composition and physical structure of silica gel determine that it has many characteristics which are difficult to be replaced by other similar materials: high adsorption properties, good thermal stability, stable chemical properties, high mechanical strength, etc.. According to the size of the pore size, silica gel is divided into large pore silica gel, coarse pore silica gel, B type silica gel and pore silica gel.
It is worth mentioning that in biomedical engineering, polymer material plays a very important role, and the silicone rubber is a kind of important medical polymer materials, it has excellent physiological inert, non-toxic, tasteless, non corrosive, anti coagulation, and the good compatibility, can withstand the harsh conditions of sterilization. According to the requirements, it can be processed into pipes, sheets, films and special-shaped components, which can be used as medical instruments, artificial organs and so on. Nowadays, there are special medical grade silicone rubber both at home and abroad.
Silicone rubber has excellent heat resistance, cold resistance, dielectric properties and ozone resistance and ageing resistance properties, outstanding performance of silicone rubber is the use of wide temperature, at -60 DEG C (or lower temperature) to +250 DEG C (or higher temperature) under long-term use. But the tensile strength and tear strength poor mechanical properties of silicone rubber at room temperature, the physical and mechanical properties than most synthetic rubber, and in addition to silicone, silicone rubber, silicone rubber general oil resistance, solvent resistance is poor, so the silicon rubber should not be used for the general conditions of the occasion, but very suitable for many special occasions.
